Shawnee Mission School District Celebrates 5 LEED Certified Elementary Schools

Shawnee Mission School District is celebrating the achievement of five elementary schools that have earned LEED Silver Certification for sustainable design and construction. Rushton, Pawnee, Tomahawk, Westwood View, and John Diemer elementary schools all met LEED Silver standards focused on environmental responsibility, student health, and long-term sustainability.

Each school incorporates key LEED criteria, including preserving 40 percent of on-site green space, maximizing natural daylight in building design, and using water-efficient faucets and toilets, among other sustainable features.

“LEED is an intentional process for designing sustainable schools,” said Sara Greenwood. “What makes it so important is that students and the community know they are part of a school that was designed with sustainability and health in mind.”

Superintendent Dr. Michael Schumacher said the certifications reflect the district’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship and student well-being.

“I think it speaks to our commitment to environmental sustainability,” Schumacher said. “We want to make sure our students and community members experience the cleanest, healthiest, and best learning environments we can possibly provide.”
